Sacrifice

She sacrifices her enjoyment in life
for those around her.  She can live
with anyone is her reply when asked
how she lives with a husband like that.

Her secret is to get used to all the things
she hates about him, prays, and goes on.
Her children she has sacrificed
every ounce of her being from day one.

She tells her daughter when she visits her in prison
how she is sacrificing now by raising her
grandkids.  People ask her how she does
it, she beams before she gets serious
and tells about how she sacrifices herself.

And the cycle continues...

Such a sad pattern of life here. I wasn't prepared for that last line --- a real surprise. You expressed this story so well!

there is a danger in this for me...sacrifice can def lead to unhealthy things...like losing too much of oneself....nice story telling...

Oh my goodness, what a character study you have shared, Judy. There has to be a special name for a person such as this, but one thing for sure she would definitely be miserable to be around! Thanks for taking part in Poetry Jam, Judy.

What a character! This is truly unique, Judy... as always. Good to see you at the Jam.

That ending was quite a surprise! I see so many relationships like this. People get used to the sacrifice. Well done. Thank you for the visit:-)

Poignant and touching, Judy! One often wonders how a lady under siege can bring herself to face up against all odds. Amazing! Many instances of such super moms who lived up to expectations of the family. Nicely!

A brilliant intro' to the character. I don't know whether I would like her or not, but brilliantly done.

I think we both studied the same person! LOL

Now why do I think this is tongue in cheek? She loves having the grandchildren under her control? Nice puzzle.

So easy to lose yourself to sacrifice. Great words.

I hope she has something left of herself after so much sacrifice. Guess she's a modern day martyr.

A tough cookie but I hope she cherishes and values herself too ~

Good character here Judy ~

Oooooh, I'm sensing the martyr in her. Very nice, you brought her to life.

I hate that this happens so much. And wish A. that it didn't and B. that those who are sacrificing could find a way to find themselves once again and lead a life that is fulfilling in ways that are not so responsibility driven. You have uncovered some sour earth here, a truth that is unfortunately all to real.. Great writing.

There is a cycle that is probably started here and may continue for generations. How does it happen and how is this passed from mother to child. Maybe from inside the circle of events the view is different and happiness is actually found. Great poem!

This is the pattern of life sadly.

Nice way of presenting the poem

You conveyed the tragedy of this so well.

...forgetting oneself for the happiness of others is indeed a sacrifice... too sad yet mostly happening these days... you portrayed the prompt very well... very affecting.... smiles...

Sounds like her sacrifice was the wrong choice... she should have sacrificed HIM! Sometimes, lip service in this way is a way "out" of doing the right thing.

Wow. I hope this is not a self-portrait. Sounds like something we read in a newspaper... and don't realize that this quite often a friend and neighbors story...

The pleased smile when asked how she does it really says it all. She needs that outer validation, it seems, to know that somebody sees what she is doing. Really intriguing tale you have told here,Judy.
