Steady stream of commands then
hissing, suctioning
machines. Filtration of fear all around.
No one said a word to me. No eye contact.
I closed my eyes, didn’t ask, didn’t look,
mumbled, Please God, before oblivion.
I could see you from time to time
Through panels of glass and the hum
of your breathing machine. Lights blinding.
You were too vulnerable and dependent
on machines, wires, and tape.
Finally you
were brought into my darkened
room. The blue
clad nurses an entourage
coming to
see the reunion of mother and miracle child.
You looked
strong, wondrously made
ten fingers,
ten toes, all the right appendages. They handed you to me.
I engulfed you in my arms, couldn’t see
for tears, but I found your precious cheek.
That kiss has lasted my lifetime.

This is a wonderful poem, Judy. What a miracle child indeed; and I can just imagine how wonderful that first kiss was!
What a poem of mother's love judy. It brings me to tears. I didn't know Brian had a difficult bith.
Yes, he did, V. He wasn't breathing and didn't breathe for some time...longer than they thought was possible. They thought he might be mentally and/or developmentally challenged at first but no sign of that. The last thing after he went through all the stages where certain obvious brain damages would have appeared, Dr said learning disabilities was something we would have to look for. He did have a learning disability.
I LOVE the direction you went....so precious, brings real tears. Thank you, Judy. ♥
A beautiful emotive mother's poem. But then again, it is also an incredible child's poem! A kiss for a lifetime, indeed. ~neil
You've brought us on a wondrous passage. Surprise!
What a beautiful story so well expressed. A kiss to last a lifetime no matter what was to come. That is what being a mother is all about.
