Nerves fray - addiction
makes itself known,takes over
in yet another way. Ochre hued
teeth. I didn’t know
color would be involved.
Dazzling smiles all around,
not mine, not now. I’m
no perfectionist,
no innocent either.
I know the price some
pay for their addiction. Damn you
diet cokes. I’m sick of the shame
of your incessant pull.
I’ll go to the dentist,
clean away proof
of your existence in my life.
That will buy me more time
to get use to life without you.

All addictions extract their toll, i think. Some addictions are worse than others....but each one extracts something. That is the nature of addiction. Each addiction has a price, and the addict has to decide if the price is worth it. Maybe some are.....
I am thinking that myself, Mary. I don't hurt anyone. How many addicts say that I wonder. Of course I do not intend to spoof the addictions that destroy lives but I do believe everyone is "addicted" to something. Food and diet cokes for me.
Well expressed, Judy. My addiction is refined sugar. I do well and feel 100 percent better if I don't take that first bite (usually the first of dozens).
Love your poem, Judy! I thought it was going in a different direction... many things can stain our teeth. But Diet Coke? I guess I'll have to change, too.
Laurie, dntist told me any brown liquids including diet cokes can cause stain. I wish that would stop me but I imagine I'll just switch to a different toothpaste that whitens. ;)
Ahh pop can even be an addiction. I think I have one to sweets!

My soft spot for copious amounts of tea, takes it toll...My weakness, inherited from grandfathers who were avid tea drinkers, lived respectively until 93 years and 99 years:)

Mine was a diet cola as well. Then it started interfering with my digestive tract and one morning I got up and said, "Nuff of that!" And was shocked because I stopped cold turkey and it worked! Drink lots of water now and really don't miss the soda. Wish I could do the same with the sweets,

I agree with Laurie - I was a little concerned where the addiction was headed. To the dentist is better than where I thought were going !
it seemed rather grim and gloomy at first.the touch of diet coke brightened it up a bit.but the basic theme is very true.well written indeed.
We each haver our own demons, haven't we Judy? And the diet coke is getting a lot more negative press these days. Good luck as you pursue your own brand of sobriety. ;-)

YOu are so funny Judy, mixture of serious and hilarious. I am not about to give up my Diet Dr. Peppers. Mary is right that every addiction has its price and I'm willing th pay the ones for this addiction. Good poetic exploration.
